Pecha Kucha was started in Tokyo, Japan in February 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, two Tokyo-based architects who have combined PowerPoint with the notion of a visual poetry slam. The idea behind Pecha Kucha is to keep presentations concise, the interest level up and to have many presenters sharing their ideas within the course of one night. Therefore the 20x20 Pecha Kucha format was created: 20 images. Each shown for 20 seconds. 6 minutes 40 seconds per presenter. 14 presenters. 1 wild night. Details

Glen McMinn and Peter Wuensch will present thoughts on the necessity of design to students of the UWO’s Ivey School of Business and the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre in London, Ontario.
Can a business succeed today without fully engaging design in its operation? How is it possible that 94% of things produced could suffer from a lack of appropriate design? These issues will be addressed in a lecture followed the next day by an afternoon workshop where students of both business & art disciplines will collaborate on a problem solving exercise.

Poodle club goes camping! Sporting our “I learn from nature” poodle club team T-shirts, the Breakhouse office will hit the road for a biomimicry workshop / tidal bore rafting adventure on the edge of the mighty Fundy Basin. Courtesy of InterfaceFLOR (carpet manufacturers & arguably one of the greenest multinational corporations on the planet) we will renew our connection with mother earth starting with a visceral reminder of the power of the ocean. Account executive Jennifer MacNeill will introduce Nadine Gudz, Interface's manager of Sustainable Strategy and our biomimicry workshop leader. She’ll lead a discussion designed to open our minds to nature’s processes which allow a balanced life continuum and which can generate solutions for all our human challenges.

LED technology has been around for more than 40 years, and becoming much more than the red dots on your first digital watch. Covering simple explanations of how exactly an LED works as well as some of the less obvious ways we use LEDs in our everyday life, from the infrared versions in our TV remotes to their usage in traffic signals to the Nintendo Wii. Other benefits include energy conservation and a myriad of interesting approaches designers and researchers are taking with LED. From a graceful Zaha Hadid pendant fixture to paper thin, flexible, super high-resolution video screens this technology involves way more than little red dots. Come and get enlightened.

Partly a report on Charles Fishman's book of the same name, with some added thoughts on sustainable design & sustainable brand in a global economy. Mr. Wuensch draws connections to design on a number of levels and makes it clear that anyone who has a desire to help our planet survive the abuse of mankind should perhaps consider Wal-Mart as a place to start. How could one simple penny-saving decision change the way every under-arm deodorant on the planet is packaged, diverting 1 billion deodorant boxes from landfills every year? That’s Wal-Mart. Whether you love it or hate it, understanding its effect on our world isn’t a simple black & white (or green) matter.
